The Alfred Pier in Port St. Mary Harbour, along with Peel Harbour and Douglas Harbour, is one of 3 harbour piers accessible at all states of tide. The Pier is over 1,000 ft long and is used by the local fishing fleet, visiting and local yachtsmen and coasters up to 150ft in length.

Brief History

Construction on the pier was started with the laying of the foundation stone by the Duke of Edinburgh on 31 January 1882. In 1884 a green light was fixed on the extremity of the completed portion of the Alfred Pier. The Pier was completed in 1886. In 1892 an extension of the Pier was commenced.

In the 1970s the pier was very busy with upwards of 20 local trawlers working from the port, but now this has sadly diminished to only 3 or 4 boats.

The 1970s also saw a large number of herring trawlers from Scotland and Northern Ireland using the pier during the herring season, but this fishery has also all but disappeared, now.
