Douglas Head Funicular Railway
From ManxWiki
Douglas Head Funicular Railway was a twin line incline railway of approximately 140m with a track gauge of 1220mm that ran from the foot of Douglas Head to a site near to the Camera Obscura.
Installed in 1900, the railway served to transport visitors to and from the numerous attractions and facilities in the headland and acted as a convenient link for those walking from South Quay or alighting the Douglas Harbour Ferries.
The railway consisted of two counter balancing toastrack type carriages connected to each other and the winding motor by cables. The line was unusual in that it had a slight dogleg angle part way up the climb.
The railway finally closed in 1954.
Nothing of this line remains today but the overgrown trackbed is clearly visible from the bottom terminus which once housed a penny amusement arcade but is now a small car park and turning bay. A couple of decorative cast iron posts and blocked off stairs are also visible from near the lower terminus.
