The Douglas War Memorial is a 50 foot high tribute to those who have given their lives during military service in World War I and World War II located on Loch Promenade opposite the Gaiety Theatre.

Brief History

The design for the memorial was conceived by Douglas architect Ewart Crellin who also designed the Lezayre War Memorial. Scluptures were carved by Harry Hems & Co. of Exeter who also carved the St. Matthew's War Memorial. The design was unveiled to the public in 1922 with the monument itself being erected in May 1924 and unveiled in a public ceremony on the 24th May.

Originally dedicated to the fallen members of World War I, names of fallen World War II members were later incorporated into the statue.

The inscriptions on the memorial read:

Douglas commemorates the loyalty, courage, and self sacrifice of those who fell in the Great Wars 1914 - 1918, 1939 - 1945
These are they who for their country & freedoms

The rolls of names are segregated by service and year of death.
