Brief Description

Geocachers are people playing a high tech version of Hide and Seek.

Hiders place one or more triklets and a log book in a waterproof container then hide the container in a location out of sight in a place where Seekers can later find it.

The hider visits Geocaching websites and publishes the Co-ordinates of the container and maybe adds a couple of clues describing the surrounding area. Other geocachers then use their GPS receivers to home-in on the container and find it.

When they do so, they sign and date the log book to say they were there and return the container to its hiding place. Sometimes Geocachers take items from the container, but if they do they must replace them with items they brought so that subsequent Geocachers can find the "treasure".

In addition to writing in the Log Book, entries are added to the website so that others can track events surrounding the cache. Occasionally caches are found by accident and may be removed by unwitting passer-bys, again, missing or unfindable caches are reported back to the website where the original hider or another geocaher may replace the cache with new items.

A Visitor's Review

I spent a few hours walking from one side of the island to the other (Douglas to Peel) along the Heritage Trail and found all 15 caches of the Heritage Trail Series in the process, and despite getting a little wet at one stage had an enjoyable time finding the caches and walking the trail.

We did a few other caches as well and as always, geoaching took us to places we’d never been before, gave us some interesting information that we didn’t know and provided us with reasons to go to areas we just wouldn’t have gone to.
