Captain Roberts

In 1901, Captain Roberts and his crew aboard the IOMSPC Fenella rescued three men aboard a trawler called the ‘Primrose’ which was in great difficulty in gales and heavy seas.

After the Fenella’s sail was taken down and after much tactical manoeuvring, the three weak men were brought aboard the Steam Packet vessel. They were in a very bad state, having been adrift in the storm for two days, being tossed about after their trawler had lost its sails.

It was reported that but for the conduct of Captain Roberts and his crew, the three men would surely have perished. The passengers on board the Fenella could not praise the Captain and his crew enough.

A certificate was awarded to Captain Roberts by the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society on 3 July 1902 for his brave conduct.

Father in law of Tom Sheard, the first Manxman to win the Isle of Man TT races.
