History
Manx Radio became Britain's first legitimate commercial radio station when it began broadcasting from a caravan located on an Onchan hilltop on 29 June 1964 almost ten years before commercial radio was licensed in the United Kingdom.
Having our own Government and laws, the island was not subject to the same rules that prohibited commercial broadcasting in the UK, however it was still necessary to apply for a frequency and for permission to broadcast from the UK's General Post Office. This was first requested in 1960. The licence was eventually somewhat begrudgingly granted.
The station was allocated 89.0 MHz FM and a comparatively low power. In October 1964, 188 metres (1600 kHz) AM was allocated to the station to provide greater coverage.
By 1965 Manx Radio had moved to a new studio on Loch Promenade in Douglas.
In October 1969 the station moved to its current location in Broadcasting House on Douglas Head
