Port Erin Breakwater
From ManxWiki
The Port Erin Breakwater project was initiated in 1864 by the then Lieutenant Governor, Henry Loch. 200 workmen were employed on the project and stone blasted from nearby cliffs was carried into place by the Breakwater Railway.
In 1868, while still under construction, it was badly damaged by vicious storms. It was not until the following year that Tynwald voted funds for repairs and completion.
The Breakwater was finally completed in 1876 however it was damaged by more stormy weather in 1882 and finally destroyed in 1884, never to be rebuilt.
The position of the breakwater can be seen in aerial photographs and there is a marker bouy situated a safe distance from the end of the remaining stones. The remains of the wall have become an artificial reef and is a popular location for scuba diving and fishing.
